Ashura is known as the tenth day of the first Isla Ashura is known as the tenth day of the first Islamic month, Muharram. It is the day where the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), Imam Hussain (AS) was martyred along with 72 of his companions, some of them being his own family members such as: Hazart Abu Fadhl Abbas (Brother), Qasim (Nephew), Ali Akbar (Eldest son), Ali Asghar (youngest son, only 6 months old). By the the order of Yazid, Omar ibn Sa’ad didn’t even spare the women and the children. This battle took place in Karbala, where they met against the army of Omar ibn Sa’ad and were denied any access to the river of Furat, also known as the modern day Euphrates River.

The reason for such a battle to take place was because of Yazid’s want to become the Khalifa. Since Imam Hussain rejected, Yazid ordered for Imam Hussain to face death. When the news of this reached the ears of the Ahlul Bayt, Imam Hussain and his family left Medina. Because of this moment in history, we learn to stand up for justice.

It’s when people of the Muslim faith sacrifice an animal, usually a sheep. We celebrate by giving to the poor, family gatherings, and prayers. It began as a reminder when God ordered Abraham to sacrifice his son Ismail but later in a dream it was revealed to sacrifice an animal instead.

When is Shavuot 2022? Shavuot 2022 begins at suns When is Shavuot 2022?
Shavuot 2022 begins at sunset on Saturday, June 4 and ends at sundown on Monday, June 6.

What is Shavuot?
Shavuot is a celebration of God’s giving the Torah to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai.

(Together with Passover and Sukkot, it’s one of the three pilgrimage festivals on the Jewish calendar, when ancient Israelites would bring sacrifices from their harvest and livestock to the Temple in Jerusalem. It falls 49 days after the second day of Passover – the period between these two dates is known as the Omer.
The holiday of Shavuot likely evolved from an ancient grain harvest festival, and while the main focus is on the Torah, there’s a lot to do with celebrating spring as well).

What do we do on Shavuot?
Study the Torah (plus alternative ideas along this theme) Probably the best known is Tikkun Leil Shavuot, an all-night Torah study session lasting from sundown when Shavuot begins until sunrise the next morning.

Legend has it the Israelites slept late on the day God revealed the Torah – so late that Moses had to wake them up so they wouldn’t miss the proceedings – and the staying up all night is to make up for that mistake (in fact, tikkun means correction in Hebrew).

Another way to mark the holiday is by decorating your home with flowers, branches & even trees!

What foods do we eat on Shavuot? There’s a tradition to eat dairy foods on Shavuot –
Legend says when the ancient Israelites found out their meat was no longer kosher, they opted for dairy foods instead.
Sweet treats like CHEESECAKE and blintzes are Shavuot classics.

Passover is the story of the Jewish exodus from Eg Passover is the story of the Jewish exodus from Egypt. After hearing the cries of the enslaved Jews, God enlisted Moses to free the Jewish people. After God unleashed ten plagues upon Egypt, Pharaoh let the Jewish people go. However, Pharaoh gathered his armies and trapped the Jews at the Red Sea in hopes of re-enslaving them. Then, God split apart the Red Sea, allowing the Jews to cross. When Pharaoh tried to cross, God closed the Red Sea and drowned the Egyptians, marking the true beginning of Jewish freedom.

When fleeing from the Egyptians, the Jews didn’t have enough time to let the dough properly rise. As such, the unleavened dough was baked and called Matza. In observation of this, Jews don’t eat any leavened foods during Passover and eat Matza (flat, unleavened bread) instead.

COAC wishes you and your family a blessed Passover
In Christian Tradition, the Easter Triduum and Eas In Christian Tradition, the Easter Triduum and Easter Sunday are the holiest days in the Christian faith. These days last from Sundown on Thursday to Sundown Sunday.

Holy Thursday:
On Holy Thursday, Jesus, knowing his future, celebrates the last supper with his apostles, calling them to remember him. Within this meal, Jesus instantiates the Christian sacraments of holy orders and communion. This day is celebrated with mass and the "washing of the feet", in which at the last supper Jesus demonstrated the concept of servant leadership.

Good Friday:
On Good Friday, Christians remember the passion of Jesus, his arrest, trial, and death. Traditionally, Christians spend time in remembrance of Jesus’ death on the cross.

Holy Saturday:
On Holy Saturday, Christians celebrate with the Easter Vigil, a mass that initiates new adult members into the church through Baptism, Communion, and Confirmation, as well as transitions the Church into the Easter season through the blessing of the Paschal Candle. This mass traditionally starts by candlelight to commemorate Jesus' great battle with Death.

Easter Sunday:
Easter Sunday is a glorious celebration with white or gold garments and flowers that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus from the tomb he was placed in and the defeat of sin to allow God to ultimately triumph.

COAC wishes you and your family a blessed Triduum and Easter!
